Course Description

 

High School Graduation Requirements

Credits are awarded by the Ministry of Education to Secondary 4 (grade 10) & Secondary 5 (grade 11) students.

Secondary 5 (Grade 11) students must pass examinations that are prepared by the Ministry of Education in English, and French Second Language. They must also pass a course in either Physical Education and Health, or Ethics and Religious Culture.They must successfully complete their other subjects to be awarded sufficient credits.

By the end of Secondary 5 (Grade 11) students must have a total of 54 credits. Of these, 20 credits must be from Secondary 5 (Grade 11). The Ministry of Education mails your results to you in July.

 

How do Cegeps evaluate students' records?

Every year on March 1 approximately 90,000 young Québecers apply for cégep admission directly or through regional admission services.

In order to evaluate applications, most cégeps make a ranking list of applicants. They thus try to rank applicants to determine whether they are eligible, to compare them and choose the best ones in limited enrolment programs or in some cégeps where the number of applicants outnumber the places available.

How will you be ranked in relation to your "competitors" who attend different schools but have applied in the same program? What are the ranking criteria? Let us first say that these criteria are set by each single cégep and may vary from one cégep to another. But these criteria are similar in most of them. They can be summarized as follows in the cégeps members of the SRAM:

 

  • 01Your marks in Secondary 4 and 5 are used in the ranking process and all your school subjects are accounted.
  • 02In addition to marks, average deviations are calculated. In each course, your final grade is compared to the group positive and you earn points in the ranking. Therefore, it is important to have good marks and be above the group average most of the time.
  • 03Then, the subjects chosen in high school are taken into account. If you pass optional Maths (526-536), optional Chemistry or optional Physics in Secondary 5, you will be given a bonus. Why a bonus? Simply to calibrate the marks of those who take these Maths and Science courses. As a matter of fact, statistics show that the grades and deviations in these subjects are likely to be lower than in other subjects. Moreover, the students who choose these Science options are often placed in stronger groups even in subjects other than Science. Because of that they obtain a low deviation score. The bonuses for Science programs compensate for lower grades and deviations for at least equivalent effort.
  • 04Some applicants obtain a high school diploma with 54 units passed in Secondary 4 and 5, others with 64 units, and others with 80 units. Again in order to be fair to those who make extra efforts in high school, a bonus is given to all applicants who have obtained between 64 and 80 units.
  • 05Finally, for the purpose of ranking applicants, some subjects are weighed more than others although they are all considered. These heavier subjects depend on the program chosen. For example, if you choose the Social Science Program in cégep, Geography, History and Economics will be given a greater importance. English is in all cases a "heavy subject", which has a big importance for both your score and ranking.

In short, to have a good ranking we recommend that you have the best possible grades and deviation scores in Secondary 4 and 5, obtain more units in Secondary 4 and 5 than the minimum required and have good results in subjects related to the program of your choice in cégep. Moreover, if you succeed in optional courses in Maths and Science, it will be taken into account in your ranking. It is not complicated! You have to make a steady effort in high school and more particularly in Secondary 4 and 5. Successful high school studies pave the way to good college studies.

 

Success comes with preparation

The best way to be well prepared and succeed is to devote time to your studies. It is clearly documented that the probability of a high average in college increases with the time dedicated to studying in high school.
